Since the 1930's, Harrows has been in Reading, MA on Route 28, selling their famous chicken pies. It was all started by Mr. Charles Harrow and his wife Winifred. Mr. Harrow still has contact with the business, and enjoys seeing the company with his name continue on. Over the years, Harrows has seen many changes in its surroundings. When it started, Reading was sparsely populated farmland, without Route 128 or Route 93. Nowadays, Reading is a bustling residential community. Reading was a dry town until 1981, when Harrows and the Arsenault family put the question to the voters, and they passed it. Although alcohol is not a major part of the business, it is nice to give our guests the option. Over the years, at least one thing has stayed the same in Reading, though...Harrows Chicken Pies.
The company was taken over in the 1950's by Walter Arsenault, who had worked for Mr. Harrow since 1940. Over the years, the entire Arsenault family, including Walter’s wife Shirley, and seven children, Wally, Cindy, Diane, David, Danny, Joanne, and Robby has worked at the store. Wally's son Eric, is also part of the crew making it the 3rd generation of Arsenaults to work here. In 1995, the company was taken over by Danny and Wally. Walter still comes and helps out in his spare time.
Our chicken pies are still made the same way they were in 1930, with slow cooked chicken and homemade gravy made from scratch every day. They are made just the way your grandmother would have made them 60 years ago, or you would today if you had the time. The pies are a cold weather favorite, and are a perfect fit for our New England weather. Our chicken pies can be ordered ahead to pick up hot and ready to eat. They are available in four different sizes, ranging from 1-6 servings. They are perfect to fit any size family.
